I made my first real push into the third floor. In the second room I made a mistake which forced me to face an F.O.E. Thus I began confronting the Reaping Shade. I developed a strategy quickly and was convinced I'd mop this battle despite my initial terror. What I didn't understand was that time outside my |
combat was still taking place and another F.O.E. was steadily approaching. When it reached us, I was suddenly facing TWO Reaping Shades!
I doubled down. Keeping Simon (the story mode's medic) among the living quickly proved to be a futile effort. I used a grimoire skill (from a previous Ragelop encounter) to panic one of the reapers and that helped greatly. I defeated the first Reaping Shade fair and square, and did reasonably well against the second...
I won the battle. Not fair though. I noticed partway through battle that my stock of nectars had changed after I changed my mind about using one on Simon. I played around and discovered a glitch that I used to essentially have infinite Medica II for the remainder of the battle. I probably could have won without the glitch if I had items that restored TP. This game MUST have items for that, but they're not available yet.
Also, this is the first battle I actually used boost in. I kinda ignored it before because I didn't understand what it did, didn't have an instruction manual to read about it cause I have a digital copy of the game, and this was the first fight where I felt desperate enough to experiment with it. For anyone who doesn't know, boost makes your options glow red and then whatever you do (attack or skill mainly) is incredibly boosted. For me this meant having 3 of my 5 character each do massive damage for one round. One party member was fainted and the other held onto his boost for the sake of magically spawning items. It's kinda ironic that the alchemist magically conjured infinite healing items.
I received a ton of XP, and everyone in my party (except Simon who fainted) went from level 9 to level 10. Now that I know I can confidently defeat a Reaping Shade (even without the glitch), I need to develop a new grinding strategy. I wonder if F.O.E.s respawn... I don't think they do...
With my party completely drained of TP and Simon out for the count, I decided to check the next room before using an Ariadne Thread to return to town. But the next room was empty. Which actually made me super paranoid. When my paranoia was proven invalid, I proceeded to the next room which had an approaching row of 5 Reaping Shades. So I went back to town.
At this point my 3DS was warning me about battery life. This confused me since I hadn't spent THAT MUCH time playing the Etrian games. That's when I realized I forgot to lower my brightness settings after finishing Spirit Camera...
So... I'll have to wait for another shot at the third floor... which I suppose is just as well... I got work in the morning...
